The Punjab government’s Chief Minister E-Taxi Scheme has progressed to the candidate shortlisting phase, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s first government-backed electric taxi initiative since its launch by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on February 26, 2026. The scheme received over 22,000 applications for its first phase allocation of 1,100 fully electric taxis, prompting authorities to conduct selection through a transparent balloting or scrutiny process. Shortlisted candidates are being notified via SMS and email, with the formal process of vehicle allocation expected to follow once verification and financial assessment are complete.

Launched under the provincial government’s Vision 2030 framework, the scheme rolled out its pilot phase in Lahore with plans to expand to other districts. The Punjab government allocated a subsidy worth up to Rs 4 billion, covering 15 percent of the required down payment for male applicants to enable vehicle acquisition for around Rs 690,000, while women receive even greater relief with the government bearing 60 percent of the down payment. The scheme provides interest-free financing over five years and covers vehicle registration, insurance, tracker installation, and related fees. The electric taxis are equipped with panic buttons, GPS tracking, and smart meters, with a driving range of 250 to 300 kilometres per charge.

A key feature of the scheme is its focus on inclusion, with 30 percent of the e-taxis reserved for women, described by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as a milestone for female participation in the transport sector. Female-operated taxis are also distinguished by distinctive colour coding to enhance visibility and passenger safety. The scheme’s broader ambition extends well beyond the initial 1,100-vehicle pilot, with the Punjab government having since expanded the programme’s budget and scope to accommodate additional beneficiaries. Applicants who have submitted their details through the official portal at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk are advised to monitor their registered mobile numbers for official shortlisting notifications.
