Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified its stance on VPN registration, emphasizing the importance of balancing digital freedom with cybersecurity concerns. In a recent consultation session with key stakeholders, including representatives from the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), the Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA), and the Ministry of IT and Telecom (MoITT), the PTA reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating legitimate VPN usage, particularly for businesses, freelancers, and embassies.
The regulator is working to streamline the registration process while ensuring data security and compliance with relevant regulations. The PTA has also addressed concerns regarding the deadline for VPN registration, stating that no immediate action will be taken against users of unregistered VPNs after November 30th. The final decision on extending the deadline rests with the government.
PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman emphasized the importance of regulating VPN usage to ensure a safe and secure digital environment. He clarified that VPN regulation is a common practice in many countries and that the PTA aims to strike a balance between enabling digital freedom and protecting citizens from online threats. Rehman also highlighted the significance of child online safety, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and responsible digital citizenship.
Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of protecting children in the digital age. She highlighted the need for international cooperation to address cross-border cyber threats and ensure a safer online environment for all.
The PTA’s efforts to regulate VPNs are part of a broader strategy to ensure a secure and responsible digital ecosystem in Pakistan. By balancing the need for digital freedom with cybersecurity concerns, the PTA aims to create a conducive environment for businesses, individuals, and the government to thrive in the digital age.
