PTA has taken a major step towards securing the future of 5G services in Pakistan by formalizing its collaboration with Huawei during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona. This partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter for the country’s telecom sector as it prepares for the launch of 5G, with a particular focus on ensuring that the technology is secure, robust, and capable of meeting the demands of over 194 million mobile users.

The significance of this collaboration cannot be overstated. The adoption of 5G is expected to bring about a digital revolution in Pakistan, opening the door to faster internet speeds, enhanced connectivity, and an array of new services that will impact everything from healthcare to education and beyond. However, with the introduction of such a transformative technology, the need for securing the 5G network becomes paramount, both to protect users’ data and to safeguard national security.

To address these concerns, PTA and Huawei have signed a MoU that will lay the groundwork for comprehensive capacity building in the area of 5G security. The collaboration will focus on ensuring that 5G infrastructure in Pakistan is resilient, secure, and in line with international best practices. Huawei, as a leading global provider of telecom infrastructure, brings valuable experience to the table, having worked with numerous countries to help them secure their 5G networks.

A key part of this collaboration was a training session on 5G security, which took place on March 27, 2025. During the session, Huawei experts provided insights into the regulatory aspects of 5G security, referencing the security guidelines that have been issued by over 18 countries, including Germany, the UAE, and Egypt. These countries, which have already begun rolling out 5G services, have created security frameworks based on industry standards such as the GSMA’s Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme (NESAS) and 3GPP’s Security Certification Assurance Scheme (SCAS). Other key references included the security standards from ISO and NIST, as well as the Mobile Cybersecurity Knowledge Base (MCKB) from GSMA.

The session emphasized the importance of implementing these security standards before launching 5G networks. The goal is to ensure that all mobile operators in Pakistan adhere to these international guidelines and integrate 5G security best practices into their operations. As part of this effort, PTA has been encouraged to publish cybersecurity guidelines for the telecom sector, following the lead of other countries, and to include 5G security measures in its annual cybersecurity audit regime.

The involvement of experts from all mobile operators in Pakistan and PTA in the session demonstrates the growing commitment across the industry to secure 5G infrastructure. With the rollout of 5G expected to revolutionize Pakistan’s telecom landscape, the collaboration between PTA and Huawei is crucial in ensuring that the country remains competitive on the global stage while also safeguarding its digital ecosystem.

The excitement surrounding the upcoming launch of 5G in Pakistan is palpable, with millions of mobile users eagerly awaiting faster internet speeds and more reliable connections. However, it is equally important to recognize that the introduction of this new technology brings with it a host of security challenges that must be addressed from the outset. By building a strong foundation for 5G security, PTA and Huawei are not only ensuring that the rollout of 5G is smooth but also setting a global example for other countries looking to secure their own 5G networks.

Pakistan’s vision of a digital revolution is becoming a reality, and with the support of key international players like Huawei, the country is well on its way to achieving its goal of becoming a leader in the digital space. Alongside the launch of 5G, the country is also making strides in satellite internet technology with initiatives like Starlink, which promises to bring high-speed internet to even the most remote areas of the country. Together, these technologies will unlock immense potential for Pakistan’s economy and help improve the quality of life for millions of citizens.

As the country moves forward with its digital transformation, the collaboration between PTA and Huawei serves as a crucial step in ensuring that Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure is not only cutting-edge but also secure, resilient, and capable of supporting the demands of the future. With 5G on the horizon, Pakistan is well-positioned to embrace the opportunities of the digital age and play a key role in the global digital economy.
