Over two dozen scholars from Aga Khan University (AKU) have been recognized among the World’s Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists for 2024 by Stanford University, underscoring their significant contributions to global research and knowledge. The annual list identifies leading academics across a wide range of disciplines, including health care services, education, climate science, economics, mental health, and initiatives benefiting vulnerable populations such as women and children. Rankings are determined through standardized citation metrics using Elsevier’s Scopus database, evaluating the influence of researchers based on academic citations and the quality of the journals in which their work is published.

From Pakistan, more than 20 distinguished individuals from AKU feature on this year’s list. Notable scholars include Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Dr Salim S. Virani, Dr Romaina Iqbal, and Dr Jai Kumar Das, whose research has directly influenced policy and practice both domestically and internationally. Many of these researchers hold leadership positions within national and international organizations, reflecting the global reach of AKU’s research community. Collectively, AKU’s work has informed 5,347 policy documents across 25 countries, including contributions to agencies such as WHO, World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organisation, and UNICEF. Their findings have strengthened evidence-based decision-making, advanced standards of care, and shaped programs that address critical challenges in health and education.

Dr Salim S. Virani, Vice Provost of Research at AKU, commented on the recognition, stating that the rankings reflect the university’s dedication to excellence and innovation in research. He highlighted the institution’s continuous investment in advanced research infrastructure and collaborations with world-leading universities, which provide scholars with the resources and support to produce high-quality, impactful studies. According to Dr Virani, fostering a culture of rigorous academic inquiry ensures that research outcomes contribute meaningfully to society while advancing Pakistan’s scientific reputation on the global stage.

The acknowledgment of AKU researchers also signals Pakistan’s growing presence in the international research community. By consistently appearing in these global rankings, AKU strengthens its capacity to attract international collaborations, research funding, and top academic talent. This recognition not only celebrates individual accomplishments but also highlights the broader impact of research-led institutions in shaping development agendas, influencing public policy, and advancing the wellbeing of communities in Pakistan and other developing countries.

Through sustained research efforts, AKU continues to demonstrate that Pakistani scientists can compete at the highest global levels, producing work that drives innovation, informs critical policy decisions, and contributes to the development of sustainable solutions in health, education, and social welfare. The inclusion of its scholars among the world’s most-cited scientists reflects both individual expertise and the university’s commitment to nurturing a robust research ecosystem with lasting societal impact.
