Pakistan is set to launch its first Hyperspectral Satellite, HS-1, from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre on October 19, marking a significant advancement in the country’s national space program. According to Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), this mission represents a transformative milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward strengthening its space-based capabilities for national development. The launch underscores the growing collaboration between Pakistan and China in the field of space technology, focusing on applications that enhance precision in agriculture, improve disaster management, support urban planning, and monitor environmental changes.

SUPARCO stated that HS-1 will provide high-resolution hyperspectral data for multiple sectors, particularly agriculture, where it will play a critical role in precision farming. The satellite’s advanced imaging system will offer detailed insights into crop health, soil moisture, and irrigation efficiency. By enabling data-driven farming practices, it is expected to increase agricultural yield estimation by up to 20 percent, contributing to greater food security. The capability to identify crop stress and assess land fertility through spectral data will allow farmers and policymakers to make informed decisions and optimize resource use. This represents a major step toward modernizing Pakistan’s agricultural monitoring infrastructure through space-based solutions.

The satellite’s utility extends well beyond agriculture. For urban planning and infrastructure management, HS-1 will provide accurate mapping and monitoring of urban growth patterns. Its sensors can detect subtle environmental changes and capture spectral signatures of buildings and other man-made structures. These insights will support sustainable city planning, land-use assessments, and efficient resource allocation. As Pakistan’s urban centers continue to expand, such data will become increasingly vital for managing rapid development while minimizing environmental impact. SUPARCO emphasized that this satellite will enhance national capacity for evidence-based decision-making in sectors such as housing, construction, and transportation.

HS-1 will also play a crucial role in environmental monitoring and disaster response. Its hyperspectral sensors are capable of capturing data essential for early warning systems, including flood forecasting, landslide tracking, and geo-hazard assessment, especially in the northern regions and along the Karakoram Highway. The satellite’s real-time imaging capabilities will aid in post-disaster evaluation, allowing authorities to assess infrastructure damage, monitor deforestation, and manage water resources more effectively. By integrating this data with national emergency management systems, Pakistan will be better equipped to respond swiftly to natural disasters and mitigate their impact.

The addition of HS-1 to Pakistan’s remote sensing fleet, which already includes PRSS-1 launched in July 2018, EO-1 launched in January 2025, and KS-1 launched in July 2025, marks another step in expanding the country’s space infrastructure. This mission aligns closely with the National Space Policy and SUPARCO’s Vision 2047, aimed at positioning Pakistan as a regional leader in applied space technologies. Through this launch, SUPARCO continues to enhance national capacity for sustainable development using satellite data, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to harnessing advanced space-based systems for socio-economic progress.
