Blizzard revealed Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026 as its most surprising announcement of the event, introducing a sequel set after the title character has already conquered Sanctuary rather than another story focused on stopping him. The reveal came without any prior rumors, and a dedicated panel titled Forging the Next Era, hosted by Blizzard president Johanna Faries alongside several senior members of the development team, offered fans a detailed look at the project ahead of its planned Spring 2029 release.

According to narrative director Jennifer Hepler, the game is set seven years after other heroes failed to stop Diablo from conquering Sanctuary, with players now living in the aftermath of that failure. Diablo now rules from the throne of Westmarch, using humanity as a tool in his broader conflict, with his conquest framed as a stepping stone toward invading the Heavens. The Western Continent has become an extension of Hell itself, populated by corrupted humans called Dread Commanders who wield power comparable to the dukes of Hell, while anyone resisting faces imprisonment or is dragged into Diablo’s personal domain known as the Terror Realm. Players take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch, a character who discovers they can enter and survive the Terror Realm, while also carrying a mysterious personal connection to Diablo that the story gradually reveals over time. The team confirmed that Diablo himself will remain a clearly villainous figure throughout the story rather than being reimagined with moral ambiguity.

One of the more significant mechanical changes involves the return of procedural generation across both dungeons and the overworld, a process the team refers to internally as Terror Forming, reflecting how the Dread Commanders are actively reshaping the game’s landscape over time. This means players revisiting familiar regions may find different landmarks, terrain, monsters, and rewards than before, a design choice intended to keep players from ever feeling fully safe within the game world. Since traditional towns no longer exist in this destroyed version of Sanctuary, the team introduced a new solution called the caravan, a traveling group of wagons and followers that grows as players encounter other survivors along their journey, drawing comparison to the original Diablo’s Rogue Encampment as a mobile safe haven.

On the class and itemization front, Blizzard confirmed three playable classes so far, the returning Demon Hunter and Monk alongside a new class called Plague Knight, a heavily armored character built around spreading and then consuming disease for power, with the team stating Diablo V will launch with more total classes than any previous entry in the franchise. Itemization draws heavy inspiration from Diablo II, bringing back multi slot inventory items, gear based sets, and Diablo II style Runes and Runewords, while the team is also experimenting with stat requirements for items, though that feature remains unconfirmed. Blizzard said it plans to begin sharing regular updates on the game starting next year, with sign ups already open on the official Diablo V website as the studio looks to gather community feedback throughout the multi year development process ahead of launch.
