ARY Digital, one of Pakistan’s most popular entertainment channels, will stop streaming its dramas on its official YouTube channel from September 17 onwards, with programming shifting exclusively to the broadcaster’s own ARY Plus streaming application. Entertainment journalist Maliha Rehman first reported the move on Instagram, and the shift affects a channel with more than 68 million YouTube subscribers, where recent dramas like Dar-e-Nijaat and Bas Tera Saath Ho have racked up millions of views, and where 2024’s Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum amassed 206 million views across its 34 episode run, including 60 million views for its finale alone despite the show having aired on television and screened in theatres. The broadcaster’s current drama slate set to move behind the ARY Plus paywall or exclusive access includes Toota Huwa Dil, Mirza Ki Heer, and Main Tera, alongside the broader catalogue of established hits like Mere Humsafar and Ishq Hai.

The technical infrastructure behind ARY Plus was built entirely by ARYtech, the technology services vertical of the ARY Group, which officially launched the platform earlier this year as what it describes as the comprehensive digital home for the ARY Digital Network, spanning news, live sports, dramas, telefilms, and exclusive originals. ARYtech designed the platform around a “user-first” philosophy intended to rival international streaming services, building in features like an AI driven recommendation engine for personalized content feeds, support for 4K Ultra HD resolution and Dolby Digital audio on select originals, cross device synchronization allowing viewers to pause on mobile and resume on a smart TV, and offline download capability for viewing without an internet connection. To handle the technical demands of streaming to potentially millions of concurrent users, ARYtech implemented adaptive bitrate streaming to adjust video quality dynamically based on available bandwidth, along with ultra low latency edge computing infrastructure specifically built to keep live sports and news broadcasts synchronized with real world events.

The shift reflects a broader pattern across South Asian television, where broadcasters are increasingly moving premium and first run content behind dedicated streaming platforms rather than relying on open platforms like YouTube for their most valuable programming. Indian streaming services including JioHotstar and ZEE5 have followed a similar trajectory, with JioHotstar recently expanding internationally with a catalogue exceeding 160,000 hours of content, placing greater emphasis on subscription ecosystems over open platform distribution. For ARY Digital specifically, the move follows CEO Salman Iqbal’s public comments in July supporting Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal’s stated goal of developing a homegrown Pakistani streaming platform to bring domestic content to global audiences, with Iqbal noting at the time that ARY had already been approached by Netflix for content but had declined, citing an Urdu speaking audience of over a billion people as sufficient justification for Pakistan to chart its own streaming path rather than distributing through foreign platforms.

By building ARY Plus in-house rather than licensing infrastructure from an external streaming technology provider, ARYtech is positioning the platform as a flagship case study for its own capabilities as an international technology vertical, one that operates independently of ARY Group’s media operations while serving global clients in software development and digital transformation. The custom built Content Management System underpinning ARY Plus is designed to handle rapid content ingestion and high volume metadata management for the ARY Digital Network’s team, suggesting the platform was engineered with an eye toward scaling well beyond its initial drama catalogue. Whether the shift away from YouTube ultimately strengthens ARY Digital’s direct relationship with its Pakistani audience, or costs the network some of the reach it built through YouTube’s global distribution and algorithmic discovery, will likely become clear only once the full drama catalogue moves behind ARY Plus and audience viewing habits adjust to the new destination.
