Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has announced the successful launch of the country’s indigenous Electro-Optical Satellite, designated EO-3, from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in China, marking what officials have described as a historic milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward self-reliance and technological excellence in the space domain. The launch represents a significant advance in Pakistan’s indigenous satellite development programme and demonstrates the growing technical capability of SUPARCO’s engineers and scientists to design, build, and deploy Earth observation infrastructure for national priorities.

The EO-3 satellite is designed to provide high-resolution imaging data across a range of critical application areas. Its primary use cases include urban planning, where satellite imagery can support infrastructure development and city management at scale, disaster management, where real-time Earth observation data is essential for rapid response and damage assessment, food security, where agricultural monitoring and crop health analysis can inform policy and resource allocation, and environmental protection, where continuous monitoring of land use, deforestation, and ecological change provides a factual basis for conservation efforts. The satellite will function as part of an integrated Earth Observation System intended to serve national priorities across multiple sectors and contribute to the country’s sustainable socio-economic development over the coming years.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif issued a message on the occasion commending the professional excellence and commitment of SUPARCO’s engineers and scientists, while also acknowledging the unwavering support of China, described as Pakistan’s all-weather friend, in the space domain. The launch was made possible through the continued strength of the Pakistan-China partnership in science and technology, which has been a consistent feature of the two countries’ bilateral cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also extended his commendation, praising SUPARCO’s technical excellence and describing the successful launch as a reflection of Pakistan’s growing scientific capability. He reiterated the government’s resolve to further strengthen the country’s presence in the space sector, signalling that the EO-3 launch is intended as a step in a longer and more ambitious national space programme rather than a standalone achievement.
