The Sustainable Development Policy Institute is set to convene a consultative discussion on international pathways to a low carbon transition for hard to abate sectors as part of its Pakistan Industrial Decarbonization Program. The online event will take place on August 20, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM Pakistan Standard Time through Zoom. The discussion is being organized by SDPI under PIDP and the Network for Clean Energy Transition: Research and Advocacy in collaboration with the International Network of Energy Transition Think Tanks. The session will bring together national and international experts to discuss approaches for reducing emissions in industrial sectors where decarbonization presents greater technical and economic challenges.

The consultation will focus on international pathways that can support the transition of hard to abate sectors toward lower carbon operations. These sectors generally include industries where reducing emissions requires significant changes to production processes, energy systems, technologies and infrastructure. The discussion is expected to examine lessons from international experiences and consider how technologies and policy frameworks can contribute to industrial decarbonization. Participants will also explore the enabling conditions required to accelerate the transition, including the role of research, policy development, clean energy technologies and cooperation between industry and other stakeholders.

The event will feature a range of national and international speakers and experts working across energy transition, industrial policy and decarbonization. Speakers listed for the consultative discussion include Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Dr. Khalid Waleed, Ubaid ur Rehman Zia, Saleha Qureshi, Arfa Ijaz, Inshrah Minahil, Kajol and Faricha Hidayati. Organizations participating in the discussion include the International Network of Energy Transition Think Tanks, Agora Industry, World Resources Institute Indonesia and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association. Their participation brings perspectives from research institutions, energy transition networks and industry, providing an opportunity to discuss both policy requirements and practical considerations associated with reducing industrial emissions.

The consultation forms part of SDPI’s work under the Pakistan Industrial Decarbonization Program and its broader engagement around clean energy transition research and advocacy. The focus on hard to abate sectors is particularly relevant for industries that face significant challenges in shifting away from carbon intensive production and energy sources. By bringing together experts from Pakistan and other countries, the session aims to examine international experiences and identify approaches that could inform future industrial decarbonization efforts. The discussion will also consider the technologies and policy frameworks needed to support a lower carbon industrial transition. The online format will allow participants to join the conversation remotely, with registration available through the event registration link shared by SDPI.
