The Pakistan Consulate General in Jeddah has formally launched the e-passport service for overseas Pakistanis residing in Saudi Arabia, bringing a more secure and technologically advanced travel document within reach of the Pakistani diaspora in the kingdom. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Pakistan’s passport infrastructure and bring it in line with internationally accepted standards for travel document security and authenticity. According to a consulate spokesperson, the service is aimed at ensuring that Pakistanis living abroad have direct access to contemporary travel documentation without having to rely on older, less secure passport formats.
The e-passport incorporates several features that set it apart from its predecessors. Chief among these is the inclusion of microchip technology embedded within the document, which stores the holder’s biometric data and allows for faster, more reliable identity verification at immigration checkpoints. The data printed on the passport uses laser printing, a method that is considerably more resistant to tampering than conventional ink-based printing, and the document is further reinforced with multiple additional security layers specifically designed to reduce the risk of forgery and unauthorized data access. These features collectively meet the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, giving Pakistani e-passport holders a document that is recognized and trusted at border controls across the world.
Officials noted that beyond the security upgrades, the introduction of e-passports is expected to make the overall immigration experience noticeably faster and more straightforward for Pakistani travelers. Biometric verification at automated border control gates, which is standard practice at airports across Europe, the Gulf, and other major transit hubs, requires a chip-enabled passport, and the move to e-passports will allow a much larger segment of overseas Pakistanis to take advantage of these expedited channels. With the service now operational at the Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah, overseas Pakistanis in the region can apply for and obtain their e-passports directly through the consulate, removing the need to travel to Pakistan or rely on intermediary channels for the upgrade.
