Open Data Pakistan, a new national-level data platform designed to drive transparency, public engagement, and evidence-based decision-making, is now officially live. Developed through collaborative efforts involving key academic and governmental institutions, the platform follows global open data standards and is built to support a wide range of users—from policymakers and academics to journalists and civil society.

This initiative introduces a modular and transparent framework for open data access in Pakistan, modeled after international portals like data.gov. By offering reusable, structured datasets that are searchable and ready for download, the platform aims to fill critical gaps in data availability and accessibility across various sectors. Its architecture has been designed with interoperability in mind, enabling it to interact seamlessly with other local and global open data portals.

Users visiting the portal at https://opendata.com.pk will find features such as dataset previews, visualizations (when the data is appropriately formatted), and options for custom downloads. It also supports standardized metadata to ensure clarity and consistency across datasets, which helps researchers and institutions incorporate it into their analytical work more efficiently.

The development of Open Data Pakistan was supported entirely by public funding and guided by open data protocols recognized worldwide. The initiative was led by a core team from the Computer Science and Economics departments at LUMS, with significant contributions from Dr. Naveed Arshad. Technical support and integration expertise were provided by the National Center in Big Data and Cloud Computing (NCBC), which ensured that the system remains scalable and adaptable for future needs.

Acknowledgment was also extended to the Planning Commission team, which played a critical role in sustaining the effort from inception through launch. Their consistent backing helped ensure that the portal aligned with national priorities around transparency, data-driven governance, and citizen empowerment.

Open data is more than a technical resource—it serves as a foundational tool for enabling accountability, stimulating research, and supporting innovation. With this platform, students, scholars, practitioners, and public institutions across the country can now access data resources to inform their work and contribute to a more transparent national discourse. From demographic statistics and economic indicators to development data and infrastructure metrics, the datasets hosted on the portal offer significant value across disciplines.

The platform emphasizes that access to reliable data should not be a privilege but a public good. By creating a centralized and publicly accessible digital repository, Open Data Pakistan opens new avenues for collaboration, policy analysis, and innovation. With its official launch, the portal stands as a critical step toward fostering a data-literate society, where information is used not just for reporting, but for building better systems, solutions, and services.
