The National Information Technology Board and the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the design, development, deployment, integration, operationalisation, and hosting of a National Pharmaceutical Products Track and Trace System, a digital governance initiative aimed at bringing end-to-end visibility and real-time oversight to Pakistan’s pharmaceutical supply chain.

The system is intended to address one of the most persistent and serious challenges in Pakistan’s healthcare sector, namely the circulation of counterfeit, substandard, and unregistered medicines across the supply chain, which poses direct risks to public health and erodes trust in the formal pharmaceutical distribution network. By enabling traceability and authentication of pharmaceutical products at each stage of the supply chain from manufacturer to end consumer, the Track and Trace System will give the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan a real-time monitoring capability that allows for faster detection of irregularities, more targeted regulatory enforcement, and a significantly higher degree of accountability across the entire medicines distribution ecosystem.

The collaboration between the National Information Technology Board and the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan reflects a broader direction in Pakistan’s digital governance agenda, where technology-driven solutions are being applied to regulatory and public service challenges that have historically been managed through manual processes with limited visibility and accountability. The National Information Technology Board brings the technical architecture and systems integration expertise required to build and host a national-scale digital platform, while the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan provides the regulatory mandate, domain knowledge, and institutional relationships within the pharmaceutical sector needed to drive adoption and compliance across industry stakeholders. Together, the initiative is expected to deliver safer healthcare outcomes for citizens nationwide and strengthen the integrity of Pakistan’s pharmaceutical regulatory framework at a time when medicine quality and supply chain transparency are increasingly important concerns for both the public and policymakers.
