The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has officially launched an updated version of the national ID card, designed to offer advanced features at a more affordable cost. The new non-chip ID card eliminates the need for a physical chip, significantly reducing production costs while retaining key functionalities that ensure secure and efficient identity verification for a wide range of official and personal purposes.
Despite the removal of the chip, the new card still offers smart features that make it a reliable tool for various services, including banking, government interactions, and travel. One of the most notable features is the card’s bilingual design, displaying essential information in both English and Urdu. This approach ensures the card aligns with national requirements and international standards, making it easier for citizens to use their IDs across borders without encountering discrepancies.
A key innovation in this new design is the inclusion of a QR code, which allows for instant digital verification through the Pak ID mobile app. This feature streamlines identity checks and reduces the risk of fraud. By scanning the QR code, businesses, government agencies, and service providers can quickly and securely verify the identity of the cardholder, improving the overall efficiency of verification processes.
Additionally, the updated card includes special identification for organ donors and persons with disabilities. Organ donors will have a unique symbol on their ID cards, making it easier to identify them in emergencies. These cards will also feature lifetime validity, removing the need for regular renewals. Similarly, individuals with disabilities will have distinct markers on their ID cards, ensuring they can access entitled benefits with greater ease and fewer bureaucratic hurdles.
The new non-chip ID card is also more cost-effective compared to its chip-based predecessor. Citizens looking to renew, modify, or replace their lost cards can now opt for this version, which offers the same essential security features at a reduced cost. First-time applicants who are 18 years old can obtain their cards free of charge under the normal category. For those who need faster processing, there are tiered pricing options:
- Normal Processing: PKR 400, delivered in 31 days.
- Urgent Processing: PKR 1,150, delivered in 15 days.
- Executive Processing: PKR 2,150, delivered in 9 days.
The introduction of the non-chip ID card is a step forward in making identification more accessible, efficient, and secure for Pakistan’s citizens. By incorporating modern features like QR verification, bilingual information, and special markers for specific groups, NADRA ensures the card serves a broader population while maintaining security and functionality. This initiative not only enhances the convenience of identity verification but also supports Pakistan’s broader digital transformation efforts.
