Meta To Test Premium Subscriptions Across Instagram, Facebook, And WhatsApp

Meta is preparing to introduce paid subscription plans across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, marking a significant evolution in how the company monetizes its social media platforms. According to reports confirmed by multiple media outlets, Meta intends to retain core app features for free users while offering premium tiers that unlock advanced tools, enhanced controls, and AI-driven capabilities. Rather than launching a single bundled subscription, the company plans to test app-specific plans designed around how users engage with each platform.

Meta has indicated that these subscriptions will provide users with greater productivity and creative capabilities. TechCrunch confirmed that the company’s plans aim to deliver additional features for power users, small businesses, and creators, leveraging AI functionality integrated into the apps. Meta’s recent acquisition of Manus, an AI agent valued at approximately $2 billion, is expected to play a key role in these new subscription services. These offerings are separate from Meta Verified, which continues to focus on verification badges, protection against impersonation, and dedicated support for creators and businesses.

Early information suggests Instagram’s paid tier could include features such as unlimited audience lists, insights into non-mutual followers, anonymous Story viewing, and more granular content controls. Many of these functionalities were previously accessible only through third-party tools that often violated platform policies. By bringing these capabilities in-house, Meta hopes to provide a secure and integrated alternative. Facebook and WhatsApp subscriptions are still being defined, but reports indicate a focus on premium privacy options, enhanced message organization, AI-assisted responses, and expanded business tools, which would complement existing free messaging capabilities.

The company is also exploring monetization of AI-powered content creation. Meta’s short-form video tool, Vibes, may adopt a freemium model, offering basic features at no cost while reserving higher output, quality, or volume for paying users. This approach mirrors strategies employed by OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft as compute demands and costs increase. Meta emphasizes that subscriptions are intended to serve a range of users, from casual everyday users to creators and small businesses seeking advanced controls, insights, and AI assistance directly within social apps. The move is also seen as a strategy to align with privacy regulations such as the EU Digital Markets Act, allowing Meta to offer enhanced experiences without heavy reliance on data-driven advertising. Testing of subscription plans will begin gradually in select markets, with features refined based on user feedback. Pricing and broader rollout timelines have not been shared publicly.
