Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched Lahore’s first electric bus service as part of a pilot project, aimed at enhancing the city’s public transport system while promoting eco-friendly alternatives. This step is a significant part of the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to modernize transportation options and reduce the environmental impact of traditional diesel-powered buses.

During the launch event, the Chief Minister personally took a ride on one of the newly introduced electric buses, showcasing her support for the initiative. Accompanied by Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, she received a detailed briefing on the project’s objectives and operational framework. The electric buses are equipped with modern amenities designed to improve passenger experience. Among these features are Wi-Fi connectivity, USB charging ports, GPS tracking, and designated seats for differently-abled passengers, all of which reflect a commitment to providing a more comfortable, accessible, and tech-friendly travel environment.

The electric bus service will operate along a 21-kilometer route, running from Lahore Railway Station to Green Town, which will serve as a major transportation corridor for the city. The buses are imported from China and have been fitted with state-of-the-art technology to ensure smooth and efficient operations. A key element of the service’s infrastructure is the network of nine charging stations that will support the fleet of electric buses. The buses are expected to cater to approximately 17,000 passengers daily, offering a cleaner alternative to conventional public transport options in Lahore.

One of the standout features of the service is its integration of digital payment systems, which will allow passengers to conveniently pay for their fares through a mobile app or other digital means. Additionally, the buses are equipped with real-time tracking technology, enabling commuters to monitor the location and arrival times of buses, making the entire commuting experience more transparent and user-friendly.

The launch of the electric bus service marks a pivotal moment in the Punjab government’s efforts to embrace sustainable development and improve public transportation systems in Lahore. By investing in electric buses, the province is taking a crucial step towards reducing the carbon footprint of public transport while ensuring a more efficient, safer, and comfortable means of travel for the citizens of Lahore. This project is expected to serve as a model for other cities across the country as they explore similar initiatives to modernize and green their transportation sectors.

Maryam Nawaz’s initiative is not just about providing a new mode of transport but also about shaping the future of urban mobility, aligning with global trends toward more sustainable, green, and technologically advanced solutions in public transportation. The introduction of these electric buses reflects a growing commitment to building an environmentally conscious infrastructure, and it signals the provincial government’s recognition of the need for sustainable solutions to combat pollution and traffic congestion in one of Pakistan’s most populous cities.

This pilot project is anticipated to bring significant improvements to the city’s transport network, making commuting more efficient and eco-friendly while meeting the needs of a growing urban population. The successful implementation of this electric bus service could pave the way for further expansion, making Lahore a leading example of sustainable public transport in the region.
