For the first time, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police deployed drone-jamming technology during Ashura processions in Peshawar as part of a strategic effort to ensure public safety. The new measure was introduced amid growing concerns about the potential misuse of drones during mass gatherings, especially in areas with a history of security threats. Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qasim Khan confirmed the deployment, stating that a drone-jamming gun was utilized to disable unauthorized aerial devices in the area.

The anti-drone system, referred to as the Peshawar Anti-Drone System, was activated during the religious procession on Yaum-i-Ashura. It successfully disrupted any suspicious drone activity within a three-kilometer radius. This technology allows law enforcement agencies to neutralize potential threats from the air without requiring physical contact, thereby reducing risk to personnel and the public. The system operates by emitting a signal that interferes with a drone’s navigation and communication systems, forcing it to either land or return to its point of origin.

The decision to introduce drone countermeasures follows reports highlighting increasing drone-related threats in southern districts of KP. These concerns have led provincial authorities to consider the use of technology-driven solutions in high-risk security scenarios. CCPO Qasim Khan noted that the drone-jamming system is now part of the broader security framework in the region and may be extended to other events depending on future threat assessments.

Ashura processions across the country, including in Peshawar, concluded without major incidents. Nationally, over 4,800 processions and around 5,480 majalis were held in multiple cities, with 12 processions taking place in Peshawar alone. Thousands of law enforcement officers were deployed to provide security coverage. The coordinated response included snipers, rescue services, and rapid response teams stationed along procession routes and in sensitive areas.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of leveraging modern tools to respond to evolving security challenges. By integrating drone-jamming capabilities into its operational procedures, KP police are taking steps to proactively address risks associated with emerging technologies. The use of such systems marks a shift toward smarter policing methods, where real-time threat mitigation tools play a role in protecting citizens during religious and public events.

The successful use of drone-neutralization equipment in Peshawar is being viewed as a pilot for broader deployment across other districts in KP and potentially other provinces. As threats involving unmanned aerial vehicles become more common in security planning, law enforcement bodies are expected to adopt similar solutions that combine surveillance, response, and preventive functions within a digital security framework.
