Islamabad Traffic Police has initiated drone-based surveillance to enhance traffic monitoring and enforcement across major roads in the capital city. The technology is being deployed to assist officers in maintaining discipline on the roads, detect violations in real time, and take immediate action against those breaking traffic laws. Initially, the drones are being used on the Islamabad Expressway and Srinagar Highway, two of the busiest routes in the city where traffic congestion and rule violations are frequent challenges.

According to Chief Traffic Officer Captain (R) Syed Zeeshan Haider, the use of drones marks a step forward in adopting modern tools for law enforcement. These aerial devices will provide a live view of traffic flow, enabling officers to identify violators on the spot and issue fines instantly. By automating this process through drone feeds, ITP aims to reduce the time and resources spent on manual monitoring while increasing overall efficiency in traffic enforcement.

The new surveillance system has been introduced with the objective of reducing road violations, ensuring smoother traffic flow, and enhancing overall road safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. CTO Haider emphasized that the drones will also serve a dual purpose by helping traffic police identify areas experiencing congestion or disruptions. With this data, quick response teams can be dispatched to manage and clear bottlenecks, keeping the city’s traffic moving efficiently during peak hours and emergencies.

This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize traffic policing across Islamabad and integrate technology into daily operations. ITP has been gradually incorporating digital solutions into its traffic management system, and the use of drones represents an advanced step in that direction. It reflects the growing trend among city administrations to leverage emerging technologies for public safety, urban management, and service delivery.

CTO Haider also noted that the initial phase will serve as a pilot, after which drone operations will be expanded to cover other major intersections, roads, and problem areas throughout the city. The long-term goal is to establish a responsive and data-driven traffic control system that relies on real-time information to ensure compliance with laws and maintain order on the roads.

By combining drone surveillance with rapid enforcement mechanisms, Islamabad Traffic Police aims to create a safer and more disciplined environment for commuters. The integration of such technology aligns with wider smart city ambitions and digitization efforts underway across various sectors of public service. Through initiatives like this, traffic authorities intend to address long-standing challenges related to congestion, safety, and law enforcement in a more structured and impactful manner.
