Insta360 is stepping into new territory with the unveiling of its first drone, the Antigravity A1, developed by a dedicated spin-off team. Long recognized for its innovation in 360-degree action cameras, the company is now bringing its expertise into the skies. The Antigravity A1 is not just another FPV drone but one that integrates 360-degree video capture, intuitive controls and a creator-friendly editing suite, marking a significant expansion of Insta360’s product ecosystem.

The Antigravity A1 weighs around 249 grams, keeping it below drone license thresholds in many regions. Its design replaces the traditional front-facing camera with two ultrawide cameras mounted on the top and underside, allowing the drone to record immersive 8K spherical footage. Using Insta360’s established stitching algorithms, the drone itself is removed from the final video, similar to the company’s “invisible” selfie stick effect, creating uninterrupted panoramic perspectives. This setup allows creators to produce dynamic content that feels both immersive and professional without extensive piloting expertise.

During early tests at a Mercedes-Benz racetrack in Schlüsselfeld, Germany, the A1 showcased how different it feels compared to conventional FPV drones. Pilots use OLED Vision goggles paired with a Grip motion controller, steering the drone from a first-person perspective. Unlike standard drones where the camera view is locked to the aircraft’s direction, the A1 streams full 360-degree video to the goggles, enabling users to look around freely as the drone flies. Its Freemotion control system, which blends traditional buttons with point-and-click steering, makes navigation more intuitive and accessible. For spectators, the goggles even include an external screen so bystanders can watch the live view in real time, enhancing the social aspect of drone flying.

The A1 is fast, responsive and surprisingly easy to fly. Even in its preproduction stage, footage quality exceeded expectations, offering versatility in post-production. Users can reframe the same clip into multiple perspectives—whether tracking a speeding car, highlighting the pilot or capturing expansive skies. Insta360’s editing software, already well regarded in the action camera space, is being adapted for the drone, allowing keyframe-based adjustments, object tracking and reframing. While the software is still in development, early feedback suggests that editing A1 footage is engaging and approachable for both professionals and casual users.

Beyond video quality, Antigravity has included safety-focused features such as payload detection to prevent unauthorized or unsafe flights. The company is also opening applications for a co-creation program, offering pre-production units to selected testers who will contribute feedback toward the final retail version. The best ideas from this initiative may be rewarded with a share of a $20,000 prize pool. Although some specifications remain undisclosed, it is clear that Insta360 is positioning the A1 as both a creative tool for enthusiasts and a potential competitor in the FPV drone market.

With goggles, a controller and advanced imaging tools all bundled into the experience, the Antigravity A1 aims to stand apart from established rivals like DJI. Pricing will play a crucial role in determining its success, but from early impressions, the A1 brings a unique perspective to drone flying—one that blends immersive 360-degree capture with intuitive piloting in a way that could appeal to both hobbyists and seasoned creators.
