Google is reportedly preparing to roll out a feature that will allow users to modify their Gmail email addresses, including those ending in @gmail.com, marking a notable shift in longstanding account policies. Previously, Gmail users could only change their account email if it was linked to a third-party address, leaving @gmail.com addresses permanent. The limitation often frustrated users who had created accounts years ago under different names or preferences. According to an updated Google support page, the company is now testing a process that enables users to switch their Gmail addresses while keeping their existing accounts, data, and access intact.

The feature, which appears to be gradually rolling out, is currently visible only in Hindi, suggesting an initial testing phase in India. Google outlines that under the new system, emails sent to the original address will continue to arrive in the same inbox as the old address becomes an alias. Users will be able to sign in using either the new or old email address, and all saved data, including emails, photos, and messages, will remain unaffected. This approach ensures continuity of service and prevents disruption for users who have longstanding Gmail accounts.

There are, however, some limitations to the new functionality. After changing a Gmail address, users cannot modify or delete the new address for a period of twelve months. Each account will have the ability to change its Gmail address up to three times, allowing for a total of four associated addresses, including the original. Certain older services, such as calendar events created prior to the change, may continue to display the original address temporarily. Google has emphasized that the original Gmail address will remain permanently tied to the account and cannot be claimed by another user, and users will still have the option to send emails from the old address.

Once fully rolled out, the feature will likely be accessible through the My Account settings, giving users greater flexibility in managing their online identity. This update responds to long-standing user demand for a mechanism to update email addresses without creating new accounts or losing accumulated data. Analysts note that enabling address changes while maintaining account continuity may improve user experience and retention, particularly for users who have rebranded or changed personal or professional identities over time. It also represents Google’s effort to make Gmail more adaptable to evolving user needs, without affecting its vast ecosystem of services connected to individual accounts.
