Google Pixel users now have a simpler way to use GameChat video calls on the Switch 2 thanks to recent software changes that allow Pixel phones to function as external webcams without additional apps or accessories. Since Switch 2 lacks a built in camera, users previously needed to rely on separate webcams to enable GameChat’s video calling feature. Android Authority highlighted the improvement after observing that Pixel devices and Switch 2 now pair smoothly, and practical testing confirms that this compatibility is active and fully functional. The development marks a notable shift for users accustomed to more complicated setups, as the Switch 2 had previously been unable to recognize Android devices for this specific feature despite Google’s earlier attempts to enable broader webcam support.

Google first introduced the capability for Android phones to operate as external webcams two years ago through a quarterly update included in Android 14. This update enabled USB Video Class mode, also known as UVC, which allowed supported Android devices to be treated as plug and play webcams when connected to compatible hardware. However, despite this system wide support, Switch 2 remained unable to communicate with the feature prior to the November Pixel Drop. The limitation was not immediately clear, as the functionality worked with various other devices that supported UVC, but the absence of recognition from Switch 2 persisted until Google’s most recent patch cycle arrived.

Evidence that the compatibility shift occurred specifically within the November update comes from direct testing conducted before and after installation. Prior to installing the November Pixel software, the Switch 2 webcam mode did not activate when connected to a Pixel phone. After the device was updated, and before any subsequent December patch was applied, webcam mode immediately functioned without requiring extra configuration. This confirmed that the relevant change was linked to the November firmware rather than later additions. The firmware release notes for November further strengthen the connection by referencing a fix for an issue affecting webcam mode with connected devices under certain conditions. Although the notes did not mention Switch 2 directly, the timing aligns precisely with the new functionality.

The situation has drawn interest from users who prefer integrated, cable based solutions instead of relying on third party webcams or wireless platforms. By enabling Pixel devices to work instantly with Switch 2, Google has effectively simplified the process for anyone who wants to take part in GameChat video calls. While the improvement appears to be directly related to the November update, official confirmation may still arrive, as inquiries have been sent to Google regarding the change. If confirmation is provided, it will further clarify the scope of UVC support and its expected interactions with devices like Switch 2. Until then, practical use already demonstrates that the pairing is live, stable and beneficial for users seeking smoother video communication through their gaming setup.
