Baba Guru Nanak University has officially launched the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Program 2025 in partnership with the US Embassy. This initiative, funded by a small grant secured from the embassy, aims to enhance the English language skills of students in journalism, providing them with a valuable platform to improve their professional careers.

The launch event was held at Baba Guru Nanak University and was presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Afzal. The program facilitator, Mohammad Asif Nadeem, representing the US Embassy’s Regional English Language Office and Evolution, briefed attendees on the objectives and expected outcomes of the course. Faculty members, students, and representatives from various educational institutions attended the ceremony, emphasizing the significance of such training programs in professional development.

During his address, Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Afzal highlighted the crucial role of English proficiency in journalism and professional communication. He stressed that the MOOC initiative would help students gain confidence in using the language effectively in their careers. Mohammad Asif Nadeem further elaborated on the structure of the program, which combines online learning with in-person sessions to maximize student engagement and learning outcomes.

The three-month course will train 25 selected students from the university’s English Department, equipping them with practical skills in journalism, self-confidence building, and career advancement strategies. These students will have access to online modules as well as interactive face-to-face sessions, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Students who attended the event expressed their enthusiasm about the opportunity, recognizing the benefits of enhanced language skills in their future professions. A female student who enrolled in the program shared her excitement, stating that it would help her refine her writing and reporting skills, making her more competitive in the job market. Another student mentioned that such international collaborations provide exposure to global journalism standards, which are essential for career growth.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, course literature was distributed among the selected students by representatives of the US Embassy. This material is designed to support students throughout the program, offering them additional resources to reinforce their learning. The launch of the MOOC Program 2025 marks a significant step in strengthening journalism education in Pakistan. By bridging language barriers and fostering professional growth, the initiative aligns with global standards, opening new opportunities for young professionals in the country. Baba Guru Nanak University’s collaboration with the US Embassy is expected to set a precedent for future academic partnerships aimed at skill development and knowledge exchange.
