Google has used its Android Show 2026, held ahead of Google I/O next week, to reveal the most significant package of Android updates in several years, centred on a new artificial intelligence framework called Gemini Intelligence and a series of features that collectively position Android 17 as a platform that anticipates user needs rather than simply responding to commands. Google wants its mobile operating system to feel less like software you navigate and more like a system that anticipates what you need, while ensuring the user always has control over the system. The updates will begin rolling out on Samsung Galaxy S26 series and Google Pixel 10 series devices this summer before expanding to smartwatches, cars, and laptops later in the year.
Gemini Intelligence is perhaps the biggest single announcement, essentially an upgrade to Gemini that makes it a lot more capable and more of an agentic artificial intelligence, able to seamlessly move between apps to carry out tasks with minimal oversight from the user. Alongside this, Google introduced Rambler, a new feature inside Gboard that upgrades the existing voice-to-text tool to handle natural, unpolished speech. When Rambler is turned on, users can speak naturally, repeat themselves, say filler words, or change their mind mid-sentence, and Rambler listens to everything and turns spoken thoughts into a clean, concise message before sending, with audio used only for real-time transcription and not stored or saved, working across multiple languages in a single message. Create My Widget allows users to build custom home screen widgets simply by describing what they want through a text prompt, with Gemini able to connect to Google apps including Gmail and Calendar to create personalized, dynamically updating widgets on demand.
On the digital wellbeing front, Pause Point is a new Digital Wellbeing tool that adds a ten-second pause screen when a user opens an app they have flagged as distracting, during which they can choose to do a breathing exercise, set a timer, look at a favourite photo, or open an alternative app, with the intentional friction baked in so that turning Pause Point off requires a phone restart. Screen Reactions is another new feature that brings expressive visual responses to incoming messages and calls, while a properly optimised Instagram tablet interface for Android tablets is also part of the update package. Android 17 is shaping up to be one of the more meaningful platform updates in recent memory, with smarter transcription, deeper cross-platform sharing, anti-distraction tools, and tighter security all part of the package, and for Samsung users the update could feel less like a routine operating system refresh and more like the foundation for One UI 9.
Security has also received a meaningful upgrade in Android 17 through the introduction of Advanced Protection Mode, a new setting designed for users who face elevated digital threats, such as journalists, activists, or public figures. Google is also expanding Quick Share to support AirDrop-style file sharing to more devices across Android, and is adding Gemini integration into Chrome, extending the assistant’s reach into the browser experience for deeper contextual assistance during web browsing. With Google I/O 2026 beginning on May 19 in Mountain View, California, further details on Android 17 including specific rollout timelines, eligible device lists, and the full scope of Gemini Intelligence capabilities are expected to be announced in the coming days.
