The film is a spin-off from the very successful Blade trilogy, which began in 1998 with the film Blade. Blade II was released in 2002, while Blade Trinity was released in 2004. The plot centred around a half-human, half-vampire vigilante who defended human beings from evil vampires.
Tariq previously co-directed the critically praised documentary These Birds Walk, which follows the life of a runaway youngster in Karachi while simultaneously highlighting the late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi’s humanitarian initiatives. The New Yorker called the documentary one of the top 50 international films of the twenty-first century. Tariq was also designated one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” and is a TED Fellow.
According to Variety, Mahershala Ali, a Muslim-American actor who won an Oscar for his role in the film Green Book, will star in the upcoming film. At the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Ali was revealed as the vigilante vampire hunter. The release date for the film has yet to be determined by Marvel Studios. Blade is expected to appear in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
