The federal government has approved policy directives allowing telecom operators to begin 5G trials in Gilgit Baltistan, clearing a major administrative step towards the introduction of next generation mobile internet services in the region. Officials said the directives were prepared by PTA on behalf of the Gilgit Baltistan Council and approved under the Gilgit Baltistan Order 2018.
According to reports, the approval enables telecom companies to move ahead with testing and technical preparations for 5G deployment in the mountainous region, which had previously remained outside the initial national 5G rollout process. Industry officials stated that the trials are expected to help regulators and telecom operators assess network performance, infrastructure requirements and service feasibility before any formal commercial rollout takes place. The development follows months of discussions regarding the inclusion of Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir within Pakistan’s wider 5G framework.
Officials familiar with the process said the trials are likely to serve as groundwork for a future spectrum auction specifically designed for Gilgit Baltistan. PTA had earlier indicated plans to hold separate spectrum auctions for the region after the completion of the mainland 5G auction held earlier this year. The national 5G spectrum auction generated more than $500 million after spectrum was awarded to major telecom operators including Jazz, Zong and Ufone.
Telecom operators are now expected to coordinate with regulators and regional authorities to complete technical arrangements required for testing services in different areas of Gilgit Baltistan. Industry observers believe the launch of 5G trials could improve internet access, digital services and communication infrastructure in remote locations where connectivity challenges have historically affected businesses, tourism and education sectors. The region already relies heavily on telecom infrastructure provided through public and private sector operators, including Special Communications Organization, which manages a significant portion of digital connectivity services in Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The latest development is being viewed as part of wider efforts to expand digital infrastructure and broadband access across underserved regions of Pakistan. Officials have stated that extending next generation connectivity services to remote areas remains important for improving access to online education, digital commerce, tourism related services and communication networks. The timeline for commercial 5G services in Gilgit Baltistan has not yet been officially announced, although telecom companies are expected to begin testing activities after completing regulatory and technical procedures.
