Meta owned messaging platform WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature on WhatsApp Web that allows users to make audio and video calls directly from their web browser. The update expands the platform’s communication capabilities by enabling real time voice and video interaction without requiring a separate desktop application. With this addition, users can place calls more conveniently, particularly in work or remote settings where browser access is preferred.

The initial rollout focuses on one to one chats. Users can start a voice or video call by opening a conversation within WhatsApp Web and clicking the call button located in the chat window. According to updates shared by WABetaInfo, the feature is being gradually introduced and may not yet be available to all users. The development brings the web version closer in functionality to the mobile and desktop applications, offering a more unified user experience across devices.

Reinforcing its privacy framework, WhatsApp stated that calls made through WhatsApp Web are protected with end to end encryption using the Signal protocol. This ensures that only the participants involved in the conversation can hear or view the exchanged content. Neither WhatsApp nor its parent company Meta can access the audio or video of calls. In addition to voice and video communication, the web version now supports screen sharing, allowing users to present their screens in real time during calls, similar to the functionality available on desktop apps.

The update also addresses accessibility for Windows users who may not be using the newer hybrid desktop application, enabling them to place calls directly from supported browsers. Separately, in a recent WhatsApp beta update for Android, the company revealed plans to introduce a dedicated Meta AI tab within the bottom navigation bar. The new tab is expected to replace the Communities section, although users will still retain the ability to create and manage communities through the chats tab. Together, these updates reflect WhatsApp’s continued focus on expanding browser based functionality and integrating AI driven features into its broader messaging ecosystem.
