WhatsApp is developing an automatic message translation feature that will allow users to receive incoming messages translated in real time across 21 supported languages, removing the need for the manual per-message translation process currently available in the application. The feature, which is still in development ahead of a beta testing phase before wider release, builds on the existing manual translation tool that requires users to individually select messages and tap a separate translate option, replacing that friction-heavy process with seamless, automatic translation configured directly from chat settings.
Users will be able to activate automatic translation by navigating to chat settings and selecting both the source and target languages of their choice. Once enabled, incoming messages in the designated source language will be translated automatically as they arrive, while the original text remains accessible for reference. A key aspect of the feature’s design is its approach to privacy: all translations will be processed locally on the device using the phone’s system-level application programming interfaces, meaning that messages are never sent to external servers for translation and remain fully protected under WhatsApp’s existing end-to-end encryption framework. To enable this offline, on-device translation capability, users will be required to download dedicated language packs for their chosen languages, a step that enables instant translation without any internet dependency for the translation process itself.
The automatic translation feature will function in both individual and group conversations, though with an important distinction in group chats. In group settings, automatic translation will only operate effectively if all participants in the conversation are communicating in the same language, and messages written in unsupported or mixed languages will not be translated. Availability of the feature and its associated language packs may also vary depending on the version of the iOS or Android operating system a user is running, with older devices potentially unable to support all available language packs. WhatsApp has indicated that additional language support beyond the initial 21 languages is expected to be added through future updates, suggesting a phased expansion of the feature’s linguistic reach following its initial rollout to beta testers.
