UN Women is set to launch the Gender-Responsive AI School Pakistan, an initiative aimed at advancing gender responsive, inclusive, and responsible artificial intelligence development in the country. The launch is supported by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and KOICA Pakistan, reflecting a coordinated push between government and international partners to embed gender considerations into Pakistan’s expanding AI ecosystem.

Ahead of the launch, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja and UN Women Pakistan Representative Jamshed M Kazi co-authored an op-ed published in The News, making the case for why designing AI systems to serve everyone matters for the country’s digital future. In the piece, the two argued that the deeper danger posed by artificial intelligence is not that machines might surpass human thinking, but that they could absorb and reinforce longstanding societal inequalities, embedding them into the technology infrastructure of the future at a pace and scale without precedent.

The op-ed frames the launch of the AI School as a concrete step toward addressing this risk, positioning gender responsive design as a core requirement for AI systems being built and deployed across Pakistan rather than an afterthought. The initiative reflects growing international attention on ensuring AI development accounts for existing social and gender disparities, particularly as more countries move to integrate AI into public services, education, and the broader economy.

The launch adds to a series of AI related initiatives the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has pursued in partnership with international organizations over the past year, spanning skills training, policy development, and now a dedicated focus on gender inclusive AI design. With UN Women and KOICA Pakistan both involved in supporting the school, the initiative signals continued international interest in shaping how Pakistan’s AI ecosystem develops as the country works to expand its digital economy.
