The Framework Laptop 13 Pro has been described as one of the strongest Windows laptops currently available, combining a refined modular design with Intel’s newest Panther Lake processors, though a recent surge in memory prices has pushed its cost well beyond what many buyers might expect to pay. Framework, known for building repairable and upgradeable laptops over the past several years, designed the 13 Pro as its answer to premium machines such as the MacBook Pro, aiming to match their build quality and performance while preserving the modularity the company is known for.
The laptop’s hardware has received a noticeable upgrade compared to earlier Framework models, with a new machined aluminum body, a Graphite paint finish, and refined details such as rounded rubber feet and machined torx screw heads that eliminate the more utilitarian look of previous models. Despite these design changes, Framework has maintained backward compatibility with its modular ecosystem, allowing components such as the mainboard to be swapped between older and newer versions of the laptop, a hallmark of the company’s original design philosophy. The updated model introduces a larger 74Wh battery, a redesigned bottom cover, a new haptic touchpad, and improved latch mechanisms for its swappable expansion card ports.
On performance, the laptop’s Panther Lake chips and improved cooling design have addressed one of the more persistent criticisms of earlier Framework laptops, allowing the machine to run quietly under typical workloads, including local AI model testing, while only reaching its maximum fan speed under intensive tasks such as gaming. Battery life also saw a meaningful improvement, with the reviewed unit lasting just over 16 hours during a standard battery test, falling only slightly short of some competing laptops using the same chip generation.
Pricing has emerged as the laptop’s most significant drawback, driven largely by a sharp rise in the cost of LPCAMM2 memory modules used in the Intel version of the device. The mid tier configuration tested, featuring a Core Ultra 7 chip, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, is currently priced at approximately $3,100, compared to an expected price closer to $1,500 under normal market conditions. Framework has acknowledged the pricing issue publicly, stating it was unable to fulfill earlier pre-orders at originally quoted prices after its RAM supplier doubled costs, and has offered full refunds to affected customers who no longer wish to proceed with their purchase at the adjusted price.
