Medical experts at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad performed a robot-assisted surgery using the Toumai surgical robot on Thursday, marking a significant step in the adoption of advanced medical technology in Pakistan. The surgery, which focused on the removal of adrenal glands, was conducted by a combined team of local and international specialists, highlighting the growing collaboration between Pakistani healthcare institutions and global medical expertise. Robot-assisted surgery has gained prominence in urology for its ability to deliver greater precision, reduced invasiveness, and improved outcomes compared to conventional surgical methods. The Toumai system features force-sensing technology, high-frequency response capabilities, and telerobotic functions, making it suitable for complex surgical procedures while maintaining safety and efficiency.
The surgical procedure was carried out by UK-based medical experts Prof Mateen Sharif and Dr Javed Burki, alongside PIMS surgeons including Dr Atif Inam Shami, Dr Burhan ul Haq, and Dr Khalid Saeed. Executive Director of PIMS, Dr Rana Imran Sikander, confirmed that this was the first robotic surgery performed at the hospital. The patient, a 70-year-old female diagnosed with a left adrenal pheochromocytoma, underwent a left robotic adrenalectomy. The tumour had been causing symptoms such as high blood pressure, palpitations, excessive sweating, and headaches due to overproduction of hormones. The removal of the adrenal gland is expected to stabilize her blood pressure, alleviate these symptoms, and improve her overall quality of life. According to PIMS officials, the patient is anticipated to be discharged in a few days.
During the procedure, the Toumai robot’s capabilities allowed the team to operate with high precision in a minimally invasive manner, reducing recovery time and potential complications. PIMS spokesperson Dr Mubashir Daha explained that the adrenal glands, situated above the kidneys, play a critical role in regulating metabolism, immune function, blood pressure, and stress response. The integration of robotic technology into surgeries like adrenalectomy is considered a major advancement, providing patients with safer surgical experiences, reduced postoperative discomfort, and faster recovery periods. Dr Imran Sikander added that while the robot used in this operation was brought from the UK, PIMS intends to acquire its own system to establish ongoing robotic surgery services within the hospital.
The introduction of Toumai robotic surgery at PIMS is also accompanied by a dedicated workshop, led by Prof Dr Atif Inam Shami, aimed at training medical professionals in the use of advanced robotic systems. Prof Mateen Sharif described the procedure as the beginning of a new chapter for Pakistan’s healthcare sector. He noted that the robot, manufactured in China, represents a mission to expand robotic-assisted procedures across the country. Experts anticipate that this technology will enhance surgical capabilities in general surgery, urology, and other specialized fields, ultimately strengthening Pakistan’s capacity to deliver high-quality healthcare services while keeping pace with global medical advancements.
