Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has forecast that Eidul Azha is expected to be observed in Pakistan on May 27, 2026, based on astronomical assessments related to the sighting of the Zilhajj moon. The announcement was issued on Tuesday as the space agency shared details regarding the expected birth of the new moon and the visibility conditions across different parts of the country.

According to Suparco, the new moon of Zilhajj 1447 AH is expected to be born on May 17 at 1:01am. The agency stated that by sunset on the same day, the moon’s age would be approximately 18 hours and 30 minutes, which is considered suitable for visibility under favourable weather conditions. It further noted that the time difference between sunset and moonset along Pakistan’s coastal belt is expected to be around 60 minutes, increasing the possibility of crescent sighting in several regions.

The agency explained that based on the available astronomical parameters, the chances of sighting the Zilhajj crescent on the evening of May 17 are considered favourable, particularly if weather conditions remain clear and visibility near the horizon is not affected. As a result, the first day of Zilhajj 1447 AH is likely to fall on Monday, May 18, which would place Eidul Azha on Wednesday, May 27. Suparco’s projections are part of its regular scientific assessments that support public awareness regarding important Islamic dates and moon sighting expectations in Pakistan.

Suparco also clarified that the official announcement regarding the beginning of Zilhajj and the confirmation of Eidul Azha will be made by the Central Ruet i Hilal Committee, which remains the authorised body responsible for moon sighting decisions in Pakistan. The committee traditionally reviews witness testimonies and observations received from across the country before issuing the formal declaration. Moon sighting announcements in Pakistan continue to hold national importance, particularly during Islamic occasions such as Ramazan, Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha, where public, commercial and travel activities are closely linked with official confirmations of Islamic calendar dates.
