Work on the Safe City Project has officially commenced in Sukkur, with more than 50 modern CCTV cameras already installed across Rohri and an additional 160 cameras set to be deployed across Sukkur city in the next phase of the rollout, extending Sindh’s growing surveillance infrastructure into one of the province’s major interior cities.
District Council Sukkur Chairman Syed Kamil Haider Shah reviewed the project’s monitoring room at the SSP Office alongside SSP Azhar Mughal and Deputy Commissioner Nadir Shahzad. Speaking at a press conference, Shah said the project is aimed at strengthening surveillance and improving public safety across the district, adding that the central 9th Muharram procession will be monitored through high-resolution cameras while a modern surveillance system has been activated at all entry and exit points of the city ahead of the mourning period. The timing of the launch is particularly significant given the security requirements of Muharram, with authorities now able to monitor key routes and gathering points through a centralised camera network rather than relying solely on ground-level personnel.
SSP Azhar Mughal said the newly installed cameras are equipped with vehicle number plate recognition and facial identification technology, capabilities that go considerably beyond basic visual monitoring and enable law enforcement to actively identify vehicles and individuals of interest in real time. He added that surveillance arrangements have been established covering the stretch from Rohri to Lansdowne Bridge, describing the Safe City Project as a major step toward enhancing security and protecting citizens across the district. Once fully operational, the Sukkur network is planned to be integrated with the Karachi Safe City network, creating a linked provincial surveillance architecture rather than a collection of isolated city-level systems. Further expansion beyond Sukkur is also planned, with the project eventually set to extend to Pano Aqil, Saleh Pat, and Bagarji, gradually deepening coverage across the surrounding areas of northern Sindh.
