Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has confirmed that Starlink, the prominent satellite broadband service provider, has not yet secured the necessary license to operate in Pakistan.
The license approval has been delayed due to Starlink’s non-compliance with the government’s technical and regulatory framework. Concerns over potential interference between satellite systems and the need for detailed evaluations by multiple agencies have contributed to the delay.
While Starlink has shown interest in Pakistan and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, it has not fully met the licensing requirements for commercial launch. Other satellite broadband operators are also seeking to enter the Pakistani market but must comply with similar regulations.
The National Space Policy and Pakistan Space Activity Rules, approved in late 2023 and early 2024, respectively, outline the regulatory framework for satellite operations in Pakistan. Starlink must now adhere to these regulations to obtain the necessary approvals.
The delay in Starlink’s license approval highlights the complexities involved in launching satellite broadband services in Pakistan and the importance of adhering to stringent regulatory requirements.
