Snap Launches Specs Inc To Develop Consumer Augmented Reality Glasses In 2026

Snap Inc. has launched Specs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated exclusively to developing and commercializing its next-generation augmented reality glasses, branded as Specs, which are expected to reach the consumer market later in 2026. This step provides the company with a more focused operational structure, distinct branding, and flexibility to pursue partnerships and minority investments, allowing it to better compete with other major AR players, including Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta and upcoming smart eyewear products.

Snap’s augmented reality journey began in 2016 with its original Spectacles and has continued through multiple iterations, most recently the developer-focused Spectacles ’24. These devices helped Snap build foundational hardware capabilities and the supporting Snap OS platform. Snap OS 2.0, released in 2025, enhances spatial computing, supports intuitive AR content overlays, and enables interactive XR experiences, including browser functionality and compatibility with third-party content such as games and simulations. Over approximately eleven years, Snap has invested more than $3 billion in AR wearables, strengthening its hardware and software ecosystem in preparation for consumer-ready AR glasses.

Specs Inc. embodies Snap’s philosophy of creating technology that encourages engagement with the real world rather than isolation. The glasses are designed to facilitate shared experiences with friends, family, and colleagues through activities like backyard games, educational simulations, or collaborative virtual product reviews. By prioritizing natural interactions and user presence, Snap aims to provide an immersive, practical wearable computer that integrates smoothly into daily life. CEO Evan Spiegel emphasized in a September open letter that 2026 represents a pivotal stage for the company, with Specs positioned as a core part of Snap’s future strategy.

Unlike previous Spectacles releases that primarily targeted developers and educational institutions, the upcoming sixth-generation AR glasses are designed for the general public. This approach seeks to expand AR adoption while leveraging Snap OS’s capabilities to deliver functional and engaging experiences. With competition from Meta, Apple, and Google intensifying in the AR space, the creation of Specs Inc. allows Snap to accelerate development, attract external investment, and focus on operational efficiency, strengthening its position in a rapidly evolving consumer technology market.

Through Specs Inc., Snap is aiming to make AR a practical extension of everyday life, blending immersive technology with social interaction, entertainment, and learning. This initiative highlights a broader trend in wearable tech, where AR and XR devices are becoming increasingly accessible and integrated, offering new opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and user engagement. By combining hardware innovation with software depth, Snap positions itself to compete globally while making augmented reality an integral part of everyday experiences.
