Google Maps is introducing a major update that changes how users explore and navigate the world, combining the freshest map data with Google’s Gemini AI models. The platform now offers Ask Maps, a conversational interface designed to answer complex queries that traditional maps cannot address. Users can ask questions such as where to charge a phone without waiting in a line or find public tennis courts with lights for evening play. Previously, locating such information required extensive research and browsing multiple reviews, but Ask Maps now delivers results in an interactive, visual format tailored to the user. The feature draws on Maps’ continuously updated data and personalizes responses based on prior searches or saved locations, making it easier to plan activities and visualize options.

Ask Maps goes beyond simple recommendations, leveraging insights from over 300 million places and more than 500 million community contributors to provide accurate and detailed suggestions. Users can plan trips with directions, estimated travel times, and insider tips sourced from real-world experiences. Personalized results consider preferences, such as dietary choices or favorite environments, so a query about meeting friends at a convenient location for vegan dining will provide relevant mid-point options. The interface also allows users to take immediate action by booking restaurant reservations, saving locations, sharing recommendations, and navigating seamlessly to their destinations. Ask Maps is currently rolling out in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS, with desktop availability coming soon.

Alongside Ask Maps, Google is updating the driving experience with Immersive Navigation, the largest navigation enhancement in over a decade. The new system provides a 3D map view showing buildings, overpasses, and terrain to help drivers understand their surroundings. Key road features such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs are highlighted, allowing for safer and more confident driving. Gemini AI models analyze real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photography to provide accurate, spatially aware guidance, helping users anticipate turns, lane changes, and route challenges before they happen. The update also includes natural voice guidance, smart zooms, and transparent building overlays to give drivers a clearer view of the road ahead.

Immersive Navigation incorporates real-time traffic updates, including alternative route tradeoffs and notifications of road disruptions, supported by a community contributing over 10 million updates daily. Drivers can preview destinations with Street View, locate parking, and navigate directly to building entrances with confidence. The rollout of Immersive Navigation begins across the U.S. and will expand to eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in. By integrating Gemini AI with its extensive map data, Google Maps aims to enhance daily navigation and exploration with more intelligent, personalized, and actionable guidance for users.
