The Sindh government has formally launched an electric vehicle taxi scheme, marking a meaningful addition to the province’s expanding urban transport network and its ongoing push toward environmentally friendlier mobility solutions. The initiative was inaugurated by Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon during a ceremony at which agreements were signed with three key institutional partners: Sindh Bank, the Sindh Development Fund, and the Sindh Mass Transit Authority. These partnerships are intended to provide the financial backing and operational framework needed to roll out the programme at scale, with each partner playing a distinct role in ensuring the scheme reaches its intended beneficiaries and sustains itself beyond the initial launch phase.
The EV taxi scheme is positioned as part of a wider provincial effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-powered vehicles at a time when rising fuel costs and worsening urban air quality are placing increasing strain on both household budgets and public health in Sindh’s major cities. Electric vehicles, with their lower operating costs and zero direct emissions, are being presented by provincial officials as a practical and economically sound alternative for commercial transport operators, particularly younger workers who are looking for viable livelihood options in the formal economy. Job creation, especially for youth, has been highlighted as a central objective of the programme alongside its environmental goals, reflecting an intent to address both social and ecological challenges through a single coordinated initiative.
Speaking at the launch event, Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon drew attention to the broader trajectory of transport reforms the Sindh government has been pursuing, citing the Pink Bus service and the introduction of electric buses as earlier milestones that have improved mobility and safety across the province, particularly for women commuters. The EV taxi scheme follows in that direction, building on existing infrastructure and institutional relationships to introduce a new category of clean transport into Sindh’s urban landscape. With formal agreements now in place with banking and development partners, the groundwork has been laid for disbursement mechanisms and operational support structures that will determine how quickly and effectively the scheme reaches taxi operators on the ground.
