Sindh government is making rapid strides in introducing EV taxi service as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize the transportation sector while promoting environmental sustainability. Set to launch by February 2025, the EV taxi service is poised to revolutionize urban mobility, offering an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional vehicles.

The government’s push for an electric vehicle-based taxi service is being spearheaded by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah. In a recent meeting with officials, both ministers discussed the operational details and long-term benefits of the proposed system. During the session, officials provided key figures to demonstrate how the EV taxis would significantly benefit the average consumer.

For instance, a single ride in the EV taxi service would cost approximately 1800 rupees for a 200-kilometer journey, which is far more affordable than the private automobile and traditional taxi ride options. To put this in context, a typical private car ride costs about 20 rupees per kilometer, and existing ride-hailing services charge between 35 to 40 rupees per kilometer. In contrast, the EV taxi service would cost just around 9 rupees per kilometer, making it an affordable and accessible transportation choice for residents across the province.

Minister Memon emphasized that this service would have a transformative impact on the transportation landscape in Sindh. He highlighted how the initiative aligns with the government’s broader goals of providing modern and sustainable transportation alternatives that benefit not only the environment but also the general public, especially young workers. He underscored that the introduction of EV taxis would reduce emissions, contribute to environmental conservation, and enhance economic opportunities by creating new business prospects in the green technology sector.

The EV taxi initiative is part of a larger vision to establish a comprehensive EV system across Sindh, which will include the development of EV charging stations and offering attractive financing options for electric vehicle purchases. The government has announced plans to partner with local banks to offer accessible installment plans to unemployed youth who wish to purchase their own EV taxis. This financial assistance is aimed at empowering young people by providing them with self-sufficient business opportunities while also contributing to the green economy.

In addition to the rollout of the EV taxis, the government is working to ensure the timely completion of the necessary infrastructure to support the service. Establishing a robust network of EV charging stations is a priority to ensure that the EV taxis can operate efficiently across the province without any hindrance. The establishment of charging stations will not only support the taxi service but will also serve as a cornerstone for promoting electric vehicle usage among private owners in the future.

This initiative reflects Sindh’s commitment to sustainable development and the promotion of green technologies in the transportation sector. It is a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of urban mobility and providing affordable, environmentally friendly transport options for residents.

By making electric taxis an accessible and efficient choice, the Sindh government aims to play a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in Pakistan, ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of the global push towards sustainable and clean energy solutions.
