The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially granted an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license to M/s. Wemsol Private Limited, enabling the company to offer digital financial services in the country. This development marks a significant step forward in expanding Pakistan’s digital payment ecosystem and strengthening the fintech landscape.
With this approval, Wemsol will now provide electronic money (e-money) wallet services and payment gateway solutions, facilitating seamless transactions for both consumers and merchants. This move aligns with Pakistan’s broader financial inclusion agenda, where digital financial solutions are being prioritized to enhance accessibility and convenience in the payments sector. The SBP’s licensing of EMIs plays a critical role in fostering a regulated and secure digital payment environment while promoting innovation in financial technology.
The addition of Wemsol to the list of fully operational EMIs brings the total number of such institutions undertaking commercial operations in Pakistan to six. The other licensed EMIs include M/s. NayaPay Private Limited, M/s. Finja Private Limited, M/s. SadaPay Private Limited, M/s. Akhtar Fuiou Technologies Private Limited, and M/s. E-Processing Systems Private Limited. Each of these EMIs has contributed to increasing digital payment adoption in Pakistan, offering mobile wallets, peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments, and other financial services tailored to modern consumer needs.
In addition to the six licensed EMIs, M/s. HubPay Private Limited is currently in pilot operations, undergoing necessary regulatory assessments before being fully operational. Meanwhile, three more companies—M/s. YAP Pakistan Private Limited, M/s. Cerisma Private Limited, and M/s. Toko Lab Private Limited—have received in-principle approvals from the SBP. These institutions are in the process of developing their operational infrastructure and technological frameworks before commencing pilot operations.
The rapid expansion of the EMI landscape in Pakistan underscores the growing demand for digital financial services and the government’s commitment to modernizing the financial sector. The introduction of additional players like Wemsol not only increases competition but also enhances the availability of digital payment solutions for businesses and individuals across the country.
SBP’s stringent regulatory framework ensures that all licensed EMIs adhere to necessary compliance measures, including risk management protocols, data security, and consumer protection policies. This structured approach builds trust in digital financial services, encouraging more users to transition from cash-based transactions to digital payments.
As Pakistan continues to witness a surge in fintech adoption, the role of EMIs in bridging financial gaps and enabling seamless transactions becomes increasingly vital. Wemsol’s entry into the sector further strengthens the country’s payment infrastructure, providing new opportunities for financial inclusion and economic growth. With the SBP actively encouraging digital financial innovations, the future of Pakistan’s payments landscape appears increasingly promising.
