Punjab’s Office of AI and the provincial Communication & Works (C&W) Department are exploring potential applications of artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies to improve infrastructure planning and project delivery. Advisor to the Chief Minister Punjab, Ali Dar, met with Provincial Minister for Communication & Works Malik Sohaib Bherth to build on earlier discussions about using AI across the infrastructure sector. According to the Office of AI, the meeting reviewed shortlisted opportunities for collaboration between the two departments, with the aim of identifying practical applications that could support infrastructure-related work. The engagement reflects an effort to examine how emerging technologies can be applied to public-sector planning and implementation rather than treating AI adoption as a purely experimental exercise. However, the announcement did not identify specific projects approved for deployment or provide a timeline for introducing any proposed systems.

AI and data analytics can support infrastructure management by helping public authorities organise information, identify patterns and assess conditions when planning construction and maintenance activities. Infrastructure projects generate information through surveys, inspection reports, project records, geographical data and operational monitoring. When this information is available in a usable format, analytical tools can help officials compare project requirements, examine maintenance needs and make decisions based on available evidence. AI-based systems may also assist with reviewing large volumes of records and identifying issues that require further inspection. For a department responsible for public infrastructure, these capabilities could be relevant to planning new works, monitoring existing assets and managing maintenance schedules. The Office of AI and C&W Department have not yet disclosed which datasets, AI models or software platforms could be considered under their proposed collaboration, so the precise technical scope remains unconfirmed.

Another potential area for technology adoption is the use of predictive analytics in infrastructure maintenance. Such systems can analyse historical records and condition-related data to help identify assets that may require attention, although their usefulness depends on data quality, suitable models and validation against real-world conditions. Digital tools can also help departments monitor project information and assess progress against established plans. If adopted, these capabilities could provide officials with additional information when prioritising maintenance work and allocating resources. Nevertheless, the meeting announcement confirms only that shortlisted collaboration opportunities were reviewed; it does not establish that predictive maintenance, automated project monitoring or any other specific AI application has been selected. Any future implementation would need to define the intended use case, data access arrangements, technical responsibilities and methods for evaluating whether the system delivers measurable operational benefits.

The discussions form part of Punjab’s wider efforts to explore AI applications across government departments under its provincial AI agenda. The Office of AI, headed by Ali Dar in his role as Advisor to the Chief Minister on AI and Special Initiatives, has been engaging with public institutions and technology stakeholders to identify practical uses for emerging technologies. The proposed cooperation with the C&W Department adds infrastructure planning and delivery to the areas being considered for AI adoption. The next stage will depend on how the two departments translate the shortlisted opportunities into defined projects, establish access to relevant data and determine the resources needed for implementation. Further details about the proposed systems, implementation schedule and expected outcomes have not been announced. For now, the meeting signals an exploratory step towards assessing how AI and data-driven tools could contribute to infrastructure-related government operations in Punjab.
