Apple has officially launched the HomePod mini 2, the second generation of its compact smart speaker, bringing an upgraded processor, a refreshed color palette, and a set of new features that position the device more firmly within Apple’s growing smart home ecosystem. The HomePod mini 2 is powered by the S10 chip, the same chip used in the Apple Watch Series 10, which provides the processing headroom needed to support Siri AI capabilities that Apple says are coming in a forthcoming software update. The device also introduces an audio visualizer feature that dynamically matches the color of its LED lights to the album art of whatever is currently playing, a visual flourish that reinforces the HomePod mini’s role as a room-presence device rather than just a background audio source.
On the design side, the HomePod mini 2 introduces two new color options, pink and green, while also updating the shade of blue available from the previous generation. The classic black and white options remain available for those who prefer a more neutral aesthetic, giving the lineup five color options in total. One of the more practically significant additions this generation is the ability for the HomePod mini 2 to serve as a Mac’s default audio output, a feature that extends its utility well beyond the living room and into desktop computing setups where users may want to replace dedicated external speakers with a smart home-connected alternative.
Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Home Product Marketing, Kaiann Drance, described the HomePod mini 2 as combining Siri AI, new colors, and audio performance, and noted that its sound can fill a room independently while also scaling up in a stereo pair configuration or through multiroom audio setups. She also highlighted the pairing with the new Apple TV 4K as enabling what she described as Apple’s most immersive home theatre setup to date, and emphasised the device’s role in smart home control, noting that users can manage accessories and run automations across connected home devices using only their voice. The HomePod mini 2 sits alongside the newly announced Apple HomeView smart display, priced at United States Dollars 299, which represents Apple’s most direct entry yet into the smart home hub category dominated by Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub, and which features a conversational version of Siri AI built around understanding personal context and responding to more complex queries than previous Siri implementations have managed.
The HomePod mini 2 launch is part of what appears to be Apple’s most coordinated push into the connected home space since the original HomePod was discontinued and then relaunched in a second-generation form in 2023, with the company now offering a coherent ecosystem spanning the compact HomePod mini, the full-sized HomePod, and the new HomeView display, all tied together through a more capable version of Siri and the Apple Home app. For Apple users who have been waiting for the company to take its smart home ambitions more seriously, the combination of new hardware and the promise of improved Siri AI capabilities arriving in software represents a meaningful step forward, though the actual AI feature rollout will determine how much of that promise translates into a day-to-day experience that competes with the smart home ecosystems that Amazon and Google have spent years developing.
