The Office of AI in Punjab has held an initial working session with representatives from the international team of Alibaba Cloud, in order to explore potential collaboration across cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI) and scalable digital platforms. The meeting was announced by The Office of AI, which described it as an initial session, so the discussion marks the start of contact between the two sides and not the signing of an agreement. The three areas that were named, namely cloud infrastructure, AI and scalable digital platforms, cover the main technical foundations that a province wide programme for AI would depend on.

According to the office, the session focused on understanding the relevant capabilities of the cloud provider, exchanging technical perspectives and identifying areas where cloud and AI technologies can support the wider delivery priorities of the office under AI Vision 2029. This description shows that the purpose of the meeting was to learn what the company can offer and to see which parts of the programme of the office could use such services. By concentrating on capabilities and on technical views, the two teams looked at the practical side of the cooperation before any decisions on projects or partnerships are made.

AI Vision 2029 is the programme of the Punjab government to make the province more AI enabled by 2029, and the office has linked its delivery priorities to it. Cloud infrastructure and scalable platforms are important for such a programme, since AI applications need computing capacity and systems that can serve large numbers of users across a province. The session with Alibaba Cloud therefore relates to the infrastructure side of the plan, and it adds to the contacts that the Office of AI has held with other organizations that work on digital and AI technology.

The announcement did not describe specific projects, agreements or timelines that came out of the session, and it did not say whether further meetings are planned. It was shared with hashtags that include TheOfficeOfAI, AIEnabledDelivery, PunjabAI and AIVision2029. For the Office of AI, the working session is one step in the process of exploring partners for the delivery of its priorities, and for Alibaba Cloud it is an opportunity to present its capabilities to the team that leads the AI programme of the province.
