Punjab has introduced a QR code based system to strengthen flood risk management, marking the first initiative of its kind in the province. The new mechanism links floodplain mapping with digital identification tools, allowing authorities to access critical information about vulnerable areas through a single scan.
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority Punjab, scanning the assigned QR code provides comprehensive data related to flood prone zones, enabling officials to retrieve real time information and issue timely alerts when needed. The system has been designed to enhance preparedness and improve coordination during emergency situations, particularly in districts historically affected by seasonal flooding. By digitizing floodplain mapping and integrating it with a centralized database, authorities aim to reduce response delays and improve on ground decision making during critical hours.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that the platform will facilitate data driven evacuation planning before floodwaters reach high risk communities. The database already includes detailed information on children, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities to ensure that vulnerable populations are prioritized during evacuations and relief operations. This integration allows response teams to assess demographic distribution within flood prone areas and plan transportation, shelter, and medical assistance accordingly. Officials believe that structured data access will support more organized and efficient deployment of resources compared to traditional manual systems.
The initiative also incorporates satellite imagery and flood trend data spanning the past 20 years, providing authorities with historical context to better assess potential risk patterns. In addition, AI based early warning features are being integrated to further enhance predictive capabilities and disaster response mechanisms. By combining digital mapping, long term climate data, and automated alerts, the system is expected to strengthen preparedness at both district and provincial levels. Officials added that the technology will improve transparency in the establishment of relief camps and distribution of aid, ensuring that assistance reaches affected communities more efficiently. With climate related risks increasing across the region, provincial authorities emphasized that digital mapping and technology driven planning have become essential tools for managing natural disasters and safeguarding vulnerable populations.
