Punjab is moving toward a more technology driven transport infrastructure as the provincial highway department plans to digitize all 41 toll plazas across the province. The initiative aims to replace manual toll collection systems with digital solutions in order to eliminate overcharging, reduce corruption, and improve transparency in revenue collection. The decision was taken during a high level meeting chaired by provincial authorities, where officials reviewed the roadmap for implementing the digital tolling system across multiple locations.

From a technology perspective, the project focuses on introducing automated toll collection mechanisms supported by digital dashboards and centralized monitoring systems. These dashboards will allow authorities to track transactions in real time, improving accountability and minimizing the risk of manual manipulation. The upgrade of cash collection systems into digital formats also reflects a broader shift toward data driven governance, where transaction records can be analyzed for efficiency and compliance.

A key component of the plan is the deployment of M Tag systems across all toll plazas, enabling contactless and electronic toll payments. This system is expected to significantly improve traffic flow by reducing wait times at toll booths while also ensuring accurate billing. By integrating vehicle identification with automated payment processing, the initiative aligns with modern intelligent transport systems being adopted globally. Authorities have also indicated that toll plaza infrastructure will be upgraded to meet contemporary technological standards, supporting smoother operations and better user experience.

The move reflects Punjab’s broader push toward digital transformation in public services, where technology is being used to improve efficiency and governance. By combining electronic payment systems, real time monitoring, and upgraded infrastructure, the toll plaza digitization project is expected to create a more transparent and efficient transport ecosystem while setting the foundation for future smart mobility initiatives across the province.
