Punjab government’s free Wi-Fi initiative has expanded its reach, providing broader internet access to residents across multiple districts, including Lahore. With an upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 technology, the number of public hotspots in Lahore has increased from 200 to 230, offering faster and more reliable connectivity. This expansion is part of the government’s broader plan to enhance digital accessibility and modernize infrastructure across the province.

The Safe Cities Authority, responsible for implementing the project, has confirmed that free Wi-Fi is now available at 300 locations across 11 districts in Punjab. These districts include Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, and Attock, with select locations in Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree also benefiting from the service. Officials have indicated that efforts are underway to extend the service to the entire province in the near future.

Since its launch, the free Wi-Fi initiative has been widely utilized, with over 17.7 million users logging in and consuming a total of 438 terabytes of data. While residents have welcomed the initiative as a significant step toward digital empowerment, authorities have clarified that the free internet service is intended primarily for emergency use. Entertainment platforms and video streaming services will remain restricted to ensure bandwidth is reserved for essential digital activities.

The expansion of Punjab’s digital infrastructure aligns with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s broader vision of technological advancement in the province. In addition to the free Wi-Fi initiative, the government is actively working on integrating modern technology into the education sector. The Chief Minister has announced plans to equip public schools with digital labs and smart classrooms, emphasizing the need to prepare students for a tech-driven future. Speaking on Digital Learning Day, Maryam Nawaz underscored the importance of technology in driving economic and educational progress.

“Development is now linked to technology, and the youth of Punjab must be equipped with the skills required to meet the demands of the modern world.”

To achieve this goal, the Punjab government is introducing specialized IT training programs that will help students acquire skills in fields such as software development, artificial intelligence (AI), and freelancing. These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between traditional education and the evolving demands of global markets, ensuring that Punjab’s youth are competitive in the digital economy.

The free Wi-Fi expansion is one of several projects aimed at making Punjab a digital hub. With ongoing efforts to integrate technology into public spaces and education, the government hopes to drive economic growth, improve digital literacy, and provide greater opportunities for the province’s residents. As the project continues to grow, authorities remain focused on maintaining a secure and efficient network. Safe Cities representatives have urged citizens to use the service responsibly and adhere to the designated usage guidelines. Future upgrades and expansions are expected to further enhance connectivity and ensure that Punjab remains at the forefront of digital innovation in Pakistan.
