Pakistan’s digital economy is projected to contribute up to seven percent of the country’s gross domestic product by 2030, reflecting growing momentum in the technology sector and increasing adoption of digital services across industries. The projection aligns with broader estimates that place the digital economy’s contribution in the range of five to seven percent by the end of the decade, driven by sustained growth in IT exports, expanding internet penetration, and the rising role of digital platforms in economic activity.

The country’s digital sector has shown consistent expansion over recent years, supported by improvements in connectivity and policy initiatives aimed at encouraging innovation. With over 150 million broadband users and widespread mobile penetration, Pakistan has developed a strong foundation for digital growth. Government-led programmes focused on digital transformation, including initiatives to enhance infrastructure and support startups, have contributed to this upward trajectory.

Growth in the digital economy is also being fuelled by increasing IT and IT-enabled services exports, which have continued to rise steadily, alongside the expansion of sectors such as fintech, e-commerce, and digital payments. The integration of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, is expected to further accelerate economic contribution, with estimates suggesting that AI alone could add billions of dollars to Pakistan’s GDP by 2030.

As Pakistan moves towards a more digitised economic model, policymakers are placing greater emphasis on strengthening digital infrastructure, improving regulatory frameworks, and developing a skilled workforce to meet future demands. The ongoing expansion of broadband access, combined with efforts to promote innovation and digital inclusion, is expected to play a key role in achieving these targets. If current growth trends continue, the digital economy is likely to become a significant pillar of Pakistan’s overall economic structure in the coming years.
