Young Pakistani scientist Dr Sharmeen Fayyaz has brought pride to the country by winning the Best Young Researcher Award at the Kazan Global Youth Summit 2025. She is currently serving as a research officer at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) and Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD). Both institutions operate under the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi, which has long been recognised as one of the leading hubs of scientific research in Pakistan.

Dr Sharmeen’s work focuses on advanced research in virology and molecular medicine, fields that continue to play a critical role in addressing global health challenges. She was presented the award in a special ceremony in Kazan by Prof Dr Mohammad Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General OIC-COMSTECH, alongside several distinguished international guests. Prof Dr Iqbal lauded her achievement, noting that this recognition on a prestigious international platform is not only a significant personal milestone for Dr Sharmeen but also a matter of pride for Pakistan and the wider Muslim Ummah. He emphasised that the success of young scientists such as Dr Sharmeen demonstrates the promise of Pakistan’s scientific community and underlines their contributions in finding solutions for worldwide health concerns.

The recognition reflects the importance of nurturing young talent and supporting scientific innovation in Pakistan. By excelling at the international level, Dr Sharmeen’s award highlights the capacity of Pakistani researchers to contribute to pressing global scientific challenges. Her success is also a testament to the role of ICCBS, NIV, and PCMD in fostering cutting-edge research and creating opportunities for the country’s youth to showcase their capabilities on a global stage. For Pakistan’s research community, her achievement serves as a motivating force and reinforces the need to continue investing in young talent to expand contributions to health sciences, biotechnology, and molecular medicine.

The Kazan Global Youth Summit is regarded as one of the most prominent gatherings for emerging researchers, innovators, and policymakers from across the world. It provides a forum for young minds to present their work, share experiences, and engage in discussions that can drive future collaborations in science and technology. Dr Sharmeen’s recognition at such an event not only places her among the rising stars of international science but also brings attention to the potential of Pakistan’s next generation of scientists. Her award is seen as a reflection of Pakistan’s growing influence in the global research community and a strong indication of the country’s scientific progress through its dedicated young researchers.
