PEMRA is set to issue new licenses for Direct-To-Home (DTH) services, anticipating a significant influx of investment ranging between $2 billion to $3 billion. This revelation comes from the Economic Survey of Pakistan for the fiscal year 2023-34.
According to the survey, the issuance of these new licenses is expected to have a multiplier effect on various sectors including media production companies, advertising agencies, and performing arts. It also foresees substantial job creation opportunities for trained media personnel and journalists. The introduction of DTH satellite TV channels, FM radios, and teleport services is seen as pivotal for the industry’s advancement.
PEMRA has already granted licenses for 3 new DTH services in Pakistan, a move poised to propel the country’s media landscape forward in terms of technological enhancement and employment generation. Currently, Pakistan hosts over 140 satellite TV stations and 35 channels with Landing Rights to broadcast within the country, reflecting an accumulated investment estimated at between $4 billion to $5 billion in the electronic media sector over the years.
DTH, which stands for Direct-To-Home, enables viewers to access multiple TV channels directly via satellite to their dish receivers. This technology not only ensures superior service quality, free from issues often associated with cable connections, but also eliminates the need for monthly cable fees. Moreover, it extends television access to remote areas lacking cable infrastructure, offering a wider range of channels beyond what traditional cable operators might provide.
