Pakistan has installed more than 1.1 million smart meters across its power distribution network as part of ongoing efforts to enhance transparency, improve efficiency, and reduce losses in the energy sector. The initiative reflects a broader push towards modernising utility infrastructure through digital technologies, enabling more accurate monitoring of electricity consumption and strengthening oversight of distribution systems.

The deployment of smart meters is intended to replace traditional metering systems with advanced devices capable of recording real time electricity usage and transmitting data directly to utility providers. This allows for improved billing accuracy, reduced reliance on manual meter readings, and greater visibility into consumption patterns. Officials noted that the system is expected to help address longstanding challenges such as electricity theft, line losses, and discrepancies in billing, which have affected the performance of the power sector.

In addition to improving operational efficiency, the smart metering system is designed to empower consumers by providing better access to usage data, enabling them to manage their electricity consumption more effectively. The availability of real time information can support informed decision making, helping households and businesses optimise energy use and potentially reduce costs. The system also allows utility companies to respond more quickly to outages and technical issues, enhancing overall service reliability.

The rollout of smart meters forms part of a wider digital transformation strategy aimed at building a more transparent and accountable power distribution framework. By integrating technology into core operations, authorities aim to strengthen governance within the energy sector and improve service delivery outcomes. The initiative also aligns with global trends in smart grid development, where digital tools are increasingly being used to modernise infrastructure and support sustainable energy management.

While the installation of over 1.1 million smart meters marks a significant milestone, officials emphasised that further expansion will be required to achieve full coverage and maximise the benefits of the system. Continued investment in infrastructure, along with effective implementation and maintenance, will be essential to ensure that the technology delivers long term improvements in efficiency, transparency, and consumer experience within Pakistan’s power sector.
