Pakistan has started investment discussions with Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, widely known as CATL, as the government seeks to attract investment in electric vehicle and energy storage technologies. The talks were held during meetings between Pakistani officials and representatives of the Chinese company, which is considered the world’s largest producer of electric vehicle batteries.
According to details shared by officials, the discussions focused on opportunities for collaboration in battery manufacturing, electric mobility infrastructure and renewable energy storage systems. The engagement comes as Pakistan continues efforts to expand its electric vehicle policy framework and reduce reliance on imported fuel. Authorities also discussed the possibility of technology transfer, local manufacturing partnerships and long term industrial cooperation aimed at supporting Pakistan’s developing clean energy sector. The talks were part of broader efforts to increase industrial collaboration between Pakistan and China in emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing sectors.
CATL supplies batteries to several global automobile manufacturers and has expanded its footprint across Europe and Asia through investments in production facilities and research operations. Pakistani officials believe engagement with a company of this scale could support the country’s plans for electric mobility and local industrial development. Government representatives highlighted Pakistan’s interest in attracting investment related to battery assembly, charging infrastructure and renewable energy storage solutions, particularly as demand for electric vehicles gradually increases in regional markets.
Officials involved in the discussions stated that Pakistan is seeking foreign investment that can support industrial output, create employment opportunities and improve local technological capabilities. The meetings also examined how Pakistan’s existing automotive sector could adapt to changes taking place in the global transport industry as manufacturers move towards electric mobility and lower emission technologies. Authorities noted that battery storage systems are also becoming increasingly important for renewable energy integration, especially in countries managing rising electricity demand and power supply challenges.
The talks with CATL come at a time when several countries are competing to attract investment linked to electric vehicle supply chains, battery production and clean energy infrastructure. Pakistan has previously introduced policy measures aimed at encouraging electric vehicle adoption, including incentives for manufacturers and importers. Officials believe partnerships with major international firms could help accelerate local capacity building and encourage further private sector participation in the country’s emerging electric mobility sector. The discussions are expected to continue as both sides explore possible areas of cooperation and future investment opportunities.
