Pakistan Airports Authority has begun introducing electric vehicles into its airport service fleet, signaling a cautious but visible move toward cleaner and more sustainable operations. The development came into focus when a BYD-branded electric vehicle, featuring a yellow-and-black checkered design, was spotted operating within an airport premise. While PAA has yet to provide a formal statement detailing the scale of deployment, the presence of the vehicle suggests a deliberate step toward low-emission transport for ground operations.

Officials familiar with airport planning highlighted that electric vehicle integration forms part of broader strategies to reduce emissions generated by service vehicles used in staff movement, operational logistics, and other ground support activities. Airport operations typically depend heavily on transport vehicles, making them a critical area for sustainability initiatives. Beyond environmental benefits, the adoption of electric vehicles is expected to improve operational efficiency and reduce long-term costs, aligning with ongoing modernization efforts in airport management and support services.

Alongside vehicle deployment, PAA has initiated steps to build infrastructure to support growing demand for electric mobility. An auction notice recently offered lease rights for the establishment of a petrol station and an electric vehicle charging facility at Islamabad International Airport. This approach reflects a mixed-fuel strategy, preparing airports for a future where conventional and electric vehicles coexist while ensuring seamless operational continuity. The move signals that airport planners are not only prioritizing sustainability but also anticipating increased adoption of electric transport across Pakistan.

BYD is also expanding its presence in Pakistan’s emerging electric vehicle market, with reports indicating plans to launch two additional EV models locally before the end of January. These launches are expected to broaden consumer choices and contribute to a wider adoption of electric mobility in the country. While still in the early stages, PAA’s integration of electric vehicles represents a meaningful step toward greener airport operations and provides a visible example of how public sector institutions are embracing low-emission transport solutions.

By introducing electric vehicles alongside traditional infrastructure, Pakistan Airports Authority is establishing a foundation for sustainable airport services while supporting the broader growth of electric mobility within the aviation sector. This initiative aligns with environmental and operational priorities, offering both efficiency gains and reduced carbon footprint, and could serve as a reference model for other public and private transport systems looking to integrate cleaner technologies.
