KARACHI: National Database and Registration Authority has announced a major expansion of its services in Karachi, aimed at making registration and identity verification processes easier for citizens. The authority plans to increase the number of registration counters in the city from the current 359 to 550 by the end of the ongoing fiscal year. According to NADRA, these counters are currently operational across mega centres and National Registration Centres, with the expansion designed to improve access, reduce waiting times and enhance overall service delivery.
As part of its broader drive to digitise and modernise its operations, NADRA is introducing new online services that focus on convenience and accessibility for citizens. Among the most significant additions is an online “Proof of Life” feature launched via the Pak Identity mobile application. This service specifically benefits pensioners, especially those who struggle with fingerprint verification due to age or health conditions. NADRA’s Director of Media, Syed Shabahat Ali, said this new functionality would offer a long-term solution for senior citizens who encounter biometric or technical challenges while fulfilling verification requirements.
Ali added that arrangements are also being put in place to allow close family members, such as sons or daughters, to help elderly users complete the digital verification process. This provision is expected to make the process more inclusive for families assisting pensioners with technology use. In his remarks, Ali also urged citizens to ensure that vital life events such as births, marriages, changes in marital status and deaths are properly registered with their local union councils. He explained that accurate records at the union council level are essential for maintaining NADRA’s digital database and ensuring smooth processing of identity-related services.
In addition to the new online verification feature, NADRA has started local manufacturing of ATM-style self-service kiosks to further expand its service delivery. These kiosks will enable users to renew identity cards and complete other registration services without visiting counters in person. Initially, the self-service kiosks will be installed at mega centres in Karachi, and a broader rollout is planned for airports, railway stations, shopping malls and other public locations. This multi-pronged approach demonstrates NADRA’s focus on expanding infrastructure, increasing efficiency and providing digital solutions to meet the diverse needs of Pakistan’s citizens, particularly those in urban centres like Karachi.
